Background into zoning request:
Haven has been providing services to domestic violence and sexual assault victims at this location for over 18 years with no issues until recently when a new neighbor purchased the home on the property in front of us and are now upset that Haven is providing much needed services to these victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children. this neighbor is trying to stop Haven from being able to provide our services. It is not Haven's responsibility nor the VICTIMS responsibility to make sure that these neighbors know what surrounds their new home. THESE VICTIMS ARE NOT TO BLAME AND SHOULD NOT BE PUNISHED. Haven is providing these victims with a safe environment to enable them to break the cycle of violence and keep their children and themselves safe. Haven is petitioning Lake County Commissioners to increase the zoning to allow Haven to house more than 14 individuals. Since October of 2018, Haven has had to stay at or below 14 residents at any given time. This has made it so over 591 victims requesting safe housing have had to be referred out of our County or turned away. The most dangerous time for a domestic violence victim is when they try to leave. So to compound the stress of leaving safely, they have to worry about finding a place to go.

Haven is petitioning Lake County to approve the re-zoning request to increase the capacity of our emergency shelter. This would allow us to provide a safe place for domestic violence and sexual assault victims to go. Both meeting are held at 9am at 315 West Main Street, Tavares, FL 32778. The Zoning Board will listen and vote on January 2, 2019 and the County Commissioners will listen and vote on January 28th. Please check back often as these dates could change due to Commissioners needs on agenda.
Both of these are public events and the more we can get to attend to support Haven the better. So please pass this information around. Haven would love to make it standing room only!!
